Figured I would use this to introduce myself

New to the forum (and boats), but not fishing, recently picked up my new to me jon boat for $400 (boat and trailer). Unfortunately money is tight so I cannot go too overboard with this thing. The boat is 14ft, aluminum, 36" wide at the base, 53" wide at the top side to side.
The boat is clean and sound, no leaks, The trailer rims, leafs and axle has surface rust since the previous owner used it in salt water and didn't wash it down, luckily the frame itself is untouched and looks good. I am slowly getting the items needed to get it ready for the water. I picked up a clean well running 36lb thrust Minn Kota transom mount for $28. I did get a 10 year old boat battery that I have been trying to condition to see if it holds a charge, hopefully going to have it checked in the next few days by a pro to see if it is worth holding onto or using. If not I can get $12 core charge discount on a battery from a few local places.

Right now I am cleaning up and painting over aftermarket bolts on the boat that are starting to rust with a wire brush on my drill and using some rustoleum paint (unfortunately only had dark green on hand). Eventually going to wash the sand off the rest and make a redneck/bubba green and brown cammo type look to it. Its ugly as is so may as well keep the theme. I am also in the process of getting some inside areas sanded and painted white because that dark brown in the hot sun will turn into a skillet. I don't feel like burning myself or my oldest daughter (8) when trying to fish.

Also got plans possibly later this summer to get some 5/8" treated plywood and build a front deck from the front bench forward (in the area where the current removable grey bench boards are in the below pics), with a trap door to get to storage underneath, and then kind of the same thing on the rear, just to cover it up behind the rear bench. I am still trying to decide if I want to go with a grip type rubberized coating or carpet on the front, but definitely going with pad and carpet on the rear.

The center has a livewell so not much planned for that right now, just trying to figure out an aerator to keep the baitfish alive (not much planned mostly due to money).

Five teenagers were pulled from the ice cold Tenn-Tom waterway around midnight Saturday night after rescue crews scrambled to find the young men clinging to a nearly submerged Jon boat in an inlet just North of Nashville Ferry Landing.

Around 10:26pm, E-911 dispatched Lowndes County Sheriff’s Deputies and District 3 Volunteers to the Tenn-Tombigbee Waterway south of Columbus after a call came in from a young man who was clinging to a tree branch, and had said their boat was taking on water in the Arkansas Slew area of the river, and that his four friends were all in the frigid water.

The airwaves filled with chatter as emergency responders tried to narrow down exactly where the young men were located. Deputies Toby Rickert, Eric Granderson, Mary Huggins, Kevin Brown and Chad Waltman raced to the southern Edge of Lowndes County, constantly communicating with E-911 and District 3 volunteers to try and devise a rescue plan. Several suggestions were made of locals who may have boats that could be launched quickly to assist in the rescue, either with a watercraft- or directions. [Arkansas Slew is not necessarily the most common name for the area, many skippers refer to the spot as Hairston Bend. I was more than impressed by the knowledge of the area exhibited over the airwaves that night. I can assume every owner f every parcel of land on the East bank of the river probably received a call in the frantic first 30 minutes. –CK]

For Sale - Jon Boat in good condition. This boat is a 13 foot 'Sea King' V hull. It was my great grandfather's boat and still has a registration on the boat from Ohio in the 60's. The motor is a 9.9 horsepower Johnson outboard. The motor has very few hours on it. The motor really pushes this light boat well, it will scoot along pretty quick with two people in it. I recently serviced the lower unit fluid and had a new impeller put in. It also comes with a trolling motor, 5 gallon gas tank, and a trailer, and two wooden paddles that were original with the boat.

All of this equipment is in working order. The boat is clean and rarely get's used. It is parked indoors, in the garage at all times. Call or email Clint with questions.

How to Build Your Own Wooden John Boat

A Jon boat or John boat -- as many prefer to spell it -- is a flat-bottomed boat ideal for fishing or just wandering around the waters because of its stability. A john boat is also ideal for family  use because it can easily accommodate a recreational day out. It also is excellent to use on a river with very little current due to the small size. Because of these factors, it is good to have knowledge on building john boat.

Instructions
Things You'll Need:

    * African mahogany wood
    * Cement coated nails
    * Hammer
    * Flat-bladed screwdrivers
    * Flathead screws
    * Caulk (waterproof)
    * Sandpaper

   1.Decide on the length of the boat. Once you have decided, cut the 4 mahogany wood pieces into the size you want. Cut a triangular piece on both ends of the mahogany wood about 30 degrees in angle. You want the john boat to be wider at the top than at the bottom and when they are all affixed, it gives your john boat the ability to cut through the water and not just float on top of it.

   2.Assemble the ends and the sides. Place the ends of each wood plank -- the one with a missing triangular piece -- outside each other. Do two planks at a time. Use the flat-bladed screwdriver to mount the flathead screws on both edges of the planks to hold them together. Once attached, pour and apply a generous amount of the caulk to seal them together. Do this on both ends.

   3.Measure the dimensions of the open area at the bottom of the sealed planks. Then, cut a wood plank with the dimensions. It is not necessary that the dimensions are exact since you can use sandpaper and sand it after they are attached. Apply caulk to the bottom edge of the sealed planks and place them properly on top of the newly cut wood plank and use a hammer and the nails to secure them in place.

   4.Reinforce the boat. Cut a keel out of the remaining wood planks and attach them to the middle of the boat's bottom. Use flathead screws and caulk to do this. Attach wood strips to the edges to keep water from leaking in. Use the remaining wood to cut a piece for the chair and attach them to the boat's rear part.

City To Raze Boat Docks No Immediate Plans To Rebuild

Fishermen pulled the few boats that remained from Lake Sequoyah last week, as requested by the city.
The aging, wooden docks won’t exist much longer.
The city plans to tear the four docks down in 2011, with no immediate plans to replace them. A boat ramp and courtesy dock for loading and unloading will take their place so fishing can continue, said Byron Humphry, Parks and Recreation maintenance superintendent.
In September, Parks and Recreation staff contacted everyone who rented boat stalls at Lake Sequoyah, asking if they would be willing to pay $250 each year to rent a stall to pay for new docks. The current rate is $100 annually.
Humphry said only 12 people expressed interest in paying .

Boat Building With Wooden Boat Blueprints

You can build your own boat with wooden boat blueprints. Even the amateur builder can find what you need with the right set of blueprints and have as much fun building the boat as you will sailing it. You may find free blueprints or purchase them if you find something you prefer not available for free.

You may get wooden boat woodworking plans for canoes, kayaks, or flat bottom boats. You might want to build a vintage jet ski or a flat bottom Jon Boat for fishing. You can design boats from 1957 or a large sea skiff. You might even build an old-fashioned generic boat so that you can share the experience with another.

For instance, if you would like to make a simple wooden boat, you can construct with little framework over the course of a day if you have the time. You will need a few tools including a chisel, hammer, plane, saw, and a heavy drift. You also need materials such as the pine wood to create the sides, spruce wood to make the keel, stem, transom (or stern) and trim, pine or cedar pieces to make the bottom planking and four seats, a thin metal sheet for the mold stick and twine cotton batting or an old sheet for the white lead. You can also choose to power the boat with an outboard or oars.

A small twelve-inch inboard boat is similar but it has a V-hull for easier maneuvering. It is meant to be powered with an outboard. You will need similar materials for the inboard as you would for the small boat but also accommodate the motor. In this case, you need items like the stock for deck framing, hatch cut from a deck panel, throttle control, plexiglass windshield, fuel tank, and exterior plywood deck. You should also have, shear clamp, chine, pipe and elbow exhaust system, power head, rubber gasket, stock band sawed for the stem, keelson, gearshift control, plywood floor, exterior plywood sides and bottom. Plywood transom, stock framing or framing stock, rudder on rod, motor mount bolts, control cable and pulleys, five-horsepower Scott-Atwater lower unit and a cutout for the shift rod, drive shaft and water passage are also a must.

Of course, you can build bigger or more complex boats such as a cabin cruiser, a 15-foot sailboat, or a Biloxi dinghy. You may also find wooden boat blueprints for recreational boats such as submarines, motorized surfboards, bicycle boats or a foot pedal catamaran.

16ft 40hp Hunting & Fishing Jon Boat - $3800 (Fuquay Varina)

I have a 16ft Double Wide 40hp Mariner side console Jon Boat. It has a 71lb Motor Guide thrust trolling motor mounted on the front. Two pedestal seats, one on the platform up front and one on the platform behind the driver and passenger seats. The boat is equipped with a depth and fish finder. The boat has two front spot lights as well as running lights. There are two 12v outlets, one upfront on the trolling motor mount, and one on the side console. There is a live well, four cup holders, 5 gallon gas tank hooked up under the rear platform, anchor, fire extinguisher, 8 rod holders. I build a custom hunting blind that can be assembled in minutes and is great for hunting. The center of the boat is open for great storage of decoys or gear. There is also a 15 gallon gas tank mounted under the front plat form that is not connected but can be connected if you wish to have the extra gas. The sides of the boat are painted camo, and the railings are painted with rhino liner. The boat will cruse at about 30mph and has a hydrofoil mounted on the motor. The Mariner 40hp is routinely serviced and is in great shape and is extremely clean. The boat sits on a galvanized trailer. It is rated to carry up to five people. New trailer tires and wheels were bought last year. New Impeller and Throttle controls/cables installed this year. There are four batteries in the boat (Three of which were bought new last year) two for the 24v trolling motor, one for lights and 12v outlets, and one for starting the engine. The inside (walls and floor) is carpeted. This boat has never seen salt water. I have used this boat for just driving around the lake in the summer and fishing, but mostly for duck hunting.
